Flying Guidelines

Transportation and safety rules do often change. If you have something you want to travel with which you have a question about you should double check the TSA website. These general tips will helpo you get started.

The Airport Security Screening Experience

First Rule: Pack Smart. Many people chose to send some items by carrier to their destination.

  • Carry Ons - You are allowed one carry-on in addition to one personal item such as a laptop computer, purse, small backpack, and briefcase or camera case.  These items will go through the security screening process. You will be asked to turn on a laptop and cameras will likely be subject to additional inspection.

  • Label your carry-ons with a business card or other identifying information. This helps avoid loss or the accidental "exchange" by travelers.

  • Checked Baggage should not be locked unless you are using one of the TSA accepted  locks.  If your baggage is locked locks may be broken should there be a security concern with your baggage.

  • Do NOT pack or bring prohibited items to the airport. See permitted and prohibited items. Put all undeveloped film and cameras with film in your carry-on baggage. If your bag will pass through the X-ray machine more than five times ask for a hand inspection to prevent damage.

  • Put personal belongings in clear plastic bags to reduce the chance that a Security Officer will have to handle them and to speed you through the screening process.

  • Don't wrap your gifts. Be aware that wrapped gifts may need to be opened for inspection. This applies to both carry-on and checked baggage.

Common items which are prohibited:

  • Lighters are prohibited from all baggage
  • Jewelry, cash or fragile items (no matter how they are protected)
  • Laptop computers and other electronics
  • Loose/Extra Batteries
  • Film – security screening equipment will damage it

Tips for packing items in your checked baggage:

  • Pack shoes, boots, sneakers and other footwear on top of the other items.

  • Avoid over-packing your bag. This makes it easier and faster for Security Officers to reseal your bag. While the TSA will recommend using multiple bags airlines are charging for their use. If you ship non-essential items ahead you can probably save money.

  • Avoid packing food and drink items. They may spill and other countries may prohibit some items.

  • Avoid stacking dense items such as piles of books or documents on top of each other; spreading them out within your baggage will make them easier to screen
